A look into the past...
The Hotel Alpensonne in Arosa has a long history dating back to 1914. At that time, Mr. Tropitsch, a former tuberculosis patient from Dresden, had regained his strength in Arosa and decided to build a hotel here. Already from the beginning all guest rooms were equipped with hot and cold water, which was a sensation at that time and could not be found in any other hotel in Arosa. Over the years, the hotel has been expanded and modernized several times, but the family atmosphere and personal attention to guests have always remained. Today, the Hotel Alpensonne presents itself as a charming and traditional house that reflects the history of Arosa.
1914
After Mr. Tropitsch from Dresden had spent 5 years in Arosa as a tuberculosis patient and recovered very well, he and his family built the Hotel Alpensonne in 1914. Already from the beginning, all guest rooms had hot and cold water, which was a sensation at that time and was not the case in any other Arosa hotel.
1927
The famous German writer Hermann Hesse spends two months in Arosa in winter and stays at the Hotel Alpensonne.
1954
After Mr. Gerhardt took over the hotel in the 50s, the restaurant and two floors above it were added.
1969
Takeover of the business by the Kasper family.
1978
Reconstruction of the bar and hotel lobby and entrance.
1979
Takeover by the Bareit family.
1981-1982
Installation of bathrooms with running water, shower / WC in several guest rooms and installation of the sauna.
1986
Reconstruction roof. Redesign of the Arven restaurant and veranda and construction of the garage and staff wing.
1987-1999
Renovation of the dining room and breakfast room. Reconstruction entrance hall and redesign of the bar. Installation steam bath and redesign sauna area.
2012
1st floor total renovation with rooms and bathrooms.
2018
Takeover by the Cembranos family.
2019
Complete reconstruction of the reception. New carpet was installed throughout the hallway and the elevator was redesigned. The floors in the restaurant were newly laid. In the former breakfast room, the carpet was removed and the underlying herringbone parquet was refinished.
2020
New box spring beds with Comfort mattresses replace the old beds. Both inputs were sandblasted. Likewise the restaurant chairs. The breakfast buffet area now features a new sideboard, handcrafted from Swiss stone pine by
. For the winter season 3 rooms were freshly renovated. All furniture gets the label “Made in Switzerland” from the furniture carpenter world champion Thomas Sutter from Switzerland. Room 405 also received a completely renovated new bathroom with the natural stone Andeer granite from Graubünden.
2021
The hotel’s facade has been completely renovated. At the same time, the south-facing rooms and their bathrooms underwent a comprehensive renovation—bright, freshly designed rooms with modern bathrooms that further enhance the view of the Arosa mountains.
2022
The staff rooms were refurbished with new beds and a fresh coat of paint. The large double rooms with south-facing balconies underwent a comprehensive renovation—as did the Weisshorn apartment. The south-facing balconies were sandblasted and have been shining in new splendor ever since. In addition, the roof over the restaurant was replaced.
2023
New windows were installed throughout the house—an important step toward improving thermal insulation and comfort. The large south-facing rooms with balconies also underwent a comprehensive renovation and now feature a fresh, modern look with sweeping views of the Arosa mountains.
2024
The existing heating system was completely replaced and renovated. In addition, the structural preparations for the new kitchen ventilation system were completed—an important step in light of the planned kitchen renovation next year.
2025
The kitchen underwent a complete renovation—following the preliminary work done last year, this is now the crowning touch: a completely renovated, modern kitchen that serves as the heart of the home.
